Orihuela Costa (the coast of Orihuela) is a coastal region situated on the Costa Blanca in the Province of Alicante. It sits close to the border with Murcia, near La Manga and the beautiful Mar Menor. The area is serviced by three airports, the international airport of Alicante and the provincial airport of Murcia at San Javier and the soon to open new International airport at Corvera. Despite its name The Orihuela Costa is actually around 20 kilometres away from the main historical city of Orihuela.
The Orihuela Costa enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with the welcoming cool sea breezes in summer and the protection of the surrounding mountains from the cold north winds in the winter. The Costa Blanca averages nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine each year with average year round temperatures of over 20 degrees this really is the ideal place to live and take vacations every year. In 1986 the World Health Organisation recommended the area’s climate as one of the healthiest in the world as it is neither too cold in the winter nor too hot in the summer and on average this area can boast over 320 days of sunshine each year making it the ideal year round destination.
The seaside resort of Cabo Roig is located at the southern end of the Costa Blanca in Orihuela Costa. The charming town is home to several blue flag beaches and enjoys a spectacular mountainous backdrop. Just 10 kilometres from the town of Torrevieja, Cabo Roig enjoys wide palm-lined avenues and a host of international restaurants and bars fabulous views to the Mediterranean and Mar Menor.
The tranquil resort urbanisation of Playa Flamenca enjoys two beautiful beaches and is very popular with British and northern European visitors alike. The town hall (Ayuntamiento) of Orihuela Costa is situated in Playa Flamenca and also the local sports centre controlled by the city council with indoor swimming pool and caters for a wide range of sports.
Along from the coast of Playa Flamenca is the very popular area of La Zenia which hosts one of Europe’s largest outdoor shopping malls at Zenia Boulevard with some 150 shops and many large department stores and boasts names such as C & A, Mango, Decathlon, Leroy Merlin, H & M, and one of the largest Primark stores in Europe, the centre is open seven days per week and benefits from on site parking for 4500 vehicles.
The local beaches around Punta Prima have been awarded with many European blue flags and range from natural sand dunes with a pinewood backdrop, to long stretches of golden sandy beaches. Punta Prima is more of an urbanisation than a town with apartments, townhouses and villas and is within six kilometres of Torrevieja centre.
Campoamor is an excellent location for people who want to appreciate an element of real Spanish culture. The area benefits from stunning scenery, green woodland and beautiful beaches that make Campoamor with its fabulous 18 hole golf course and lively La Fuente commercial centre a premier destination on Orihuela Costa.
The prestigious golf development of Villamartin is one of the most famous areas along Orihuela Costa with its lively vibrant “Plaza” full of international restaurants with a multitude of cuisines to satisfy all palates.
Mil Palmeras is the most southerly resort along Orihuela Costa, it is an attractive and popular seaside resort and boasts fine sandy beaches, rocky coves and bays with lots of water sports and beach facilities. The area has long been a favourite of the Spanish holiday makers travelling from as far afield as Madrid to take advantage of all this area has to offer.
